Nutritional Management of Dogs with Osteoarthritis

This course is designed to give you an overview of the most common risk factors and clinical signs of osteoarthritis (OA) in dogs, as well as information regarding assessment, key nutritional factors (KNFs), and nutritional management strategies.

Course Information

Joint health is vital to a pet’s mobility and quality of life. Using an engaging interactive format, this course will challenge you to watch for signs of OA in dogs and teach you how the vicious cycle of OA works. Additionally, you will learn how weight control and nutritional support can help minimize and slow the impact of OA on a dog’s life.

This course features a short disease overview module, followed by a case study. You will accompany Dr. Hill and veterinary nurse Ana as they help their patient Buddy, an 8-year-old Golden Retriever, and his pet parent Amy, through a clinical examination, diagnosing OA,  nutrition management planning, and follow-up visits.

You will need a general understanding of how to conduct a consultation with a pet and pet parent and an appreciation for canine health basics. Give yourself ample time to complete the course, ideally in a quiet, distraction-free setting. The course will take 60 minutes to complete or 30 minutes per module.

It is recommended that Module 1 be completed first, as the information within the first module and associated reference materials will assist in the successful completion of quiz questions in the Case Study (module 2).

The course will give you an understanding of potential OA signs and which dogs are at increased risk for developing OA. You will gain knowledge and confidence in discussing nutritional management strategies for this common canine health concern with pet parents. You will be able to guide pet parents in implementing proven nutritional management to help manage the progression of OA and provide some symptomatic relief. Ultimately, this will help you improve the mobility and quality of life for your canine patients.

This course is comprised of two modules, including disease information and a case study.
